Psychological and Emotional Self-Care

  • Journal

  • Name your emotions

  • Practice mindfulness meditation

  • Dance, sing, play music

  • Spend time in nature

  • Be curious about yourself and others

  • Identify positive qualities about yourself

  • Do something at which you’re not an expert or in charge

  • Change your “shoulds” to “coulds”

  • Practice kindness and understanding towards yourself

  • Recognize the common humanity of suffering - you are not alone in your pain

  • Savor positivity (joy, gratitude, serenity, interest, hope, pride, amusement, inspiration, awe, love)

Physical Self-Care

  • Eat regularly and healthily

  • Get enough sleep

  • Practice good hygiene

  • Exercise 3-5 times per week, preferably doing something that is actually fun

  • Try acupuncture, get a massage, or practice yoga

  • Go to the doctor and make sure there is not an underlying medical cause for mental health struggles

Interpersonal Self-Care

  • Connect with loved ones or potential new friends

  • Find a community - join a book club, take an art class, volunteer

  • Give yourself permission to rest and say “no” to others

  • Remember that everyone gets lonely, and most people love receiving a text message or call from someone they haven’t heard from in a while

  • Validate the emotions, wants, and needs of others, even if you don’t agree, and then do the same for yourself

  • Recognize your FOMO (fear of missing out) and JOMO (joy of missing out) and see if there could be a time to do the opposite of your norm

  • Practice “I feel” statements to describe how you feel, but don’t forget to advocate for yourself
